Microneedling Q & A

Joie De Vivre

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is an acupuncture-like treatment used to rejuvenate and rebuild your skin’s collagen, improving your appearance and minimizing the signs of aging.

The treatment uses a high-speed needling pen to create hundreds of tiny puncture wounds in the deeper layers of your skin. This stimulates the production of new collagen and repairs damaged skin. Microneedling can be used to treat:

  • Acne scars
  • Burn scars
  • Surgery scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Large pores
  • Stretch marks

What are the benefits of microneedling?

There are many benefits to choosing microneedling. Treatment is nonsurgical and doesn’t require anything to be injected into your skin, so the risks for an allergic reaction and side effects are rare. Other benefits include:

  • Reduced signs of aging
  • No skin discoloration
  • Effective for all skin types
  • Works on many areas of the body
  • Minimal risk of scarring or infection
  • Works in combination with other skin treatments
  • Offers adjustable needle depth
  • Immediate results

What can I expect during a microneedling session?

During your microneedling session, Theresa Phillips moves a pen-like device filled with needles back and forth over your skin, creating microscopic holes that heal almost immediately. Typically, a topical anesthetic is applied before your procedure to minimize any discomfort.

There are three phases to the wound repair process:

  • Inflammation: The initial piercing of your skin triggers your immune system and increases blood flow, removal of debris, and new tissue creation.
  • Proliferation: New cells, along with a temporary type of collagen and elastin form, helping to rebuild the wounded area.
  • Remodeling: New tissue and blood vessels have replaced the wounded area, and temporary collagen and elastin are replaced with stronger, permanent proteins.

Depending on the size and area being treated, a typical microneedling session takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

After treatment, you may experience some itching and dryness, but overall there are minimal side effects (if any). Some people report that their skin feels tender, or they experience a slight burning sensation, similar to a mild sunburn, but this should resolve on its own.
