Chemical Peels Q & A

Joie De Vivre

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a chemical solution to remove the damaged outer layers of your skin. The treatment can be applied to your face, neck, or hands, and there are three basic types:

Superficial peel

A superficial peel is the mildest form of a chemical peel. During your treatment, Theresa Phillips applies a mild acid, such as alpha-hydroxy acid, to penetrate your outer layer of skin. A superficial peel can improve the appearance of rough skin and mild discoloration.

Medium peel

During a medium peel, glycol or trichloroacetic acid penetrates your outer and middle layers of skin. It’s used to treat:

  • Rough skin
  • Age spots
  • Freckles
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Moderate skin discoloration
  • Acne scars
  • Sun damage

Deep peel

A deep peel is the most extreme form of a chemical peel. During a treatment, trichloroacetic acid or phenol penetrates the middle layer of skin. Besides dramatic improvements in the appearance of age spots and freckles, a deep peel is used to treat shallow scars and moderate lines.

What can I expect during a chemical peel?

Depending on your desired results and your health history, under the direction of Dr. James Franz, the aesthetic teamwill provide what type of chemical peel is best for you. After a thorough cleansing, one or more chemical solutions will be applied to small areas of your skin. The solution makes your skin blister and eventually peel off, leaving behind a new, fresh layer of skin.

What can I expect after a chemical peel?

Chemical peels dramatically improve your skin’s tone and texture. Once your skin has healed, you’ll see a noticeable difference in pigmentation, as well as reduced fine lines and wrinkles.

It’s common to experience some redness and stinging after a chemical peel, but these side effects are often comparable to what you’d experience from a sunburn. It’s important to avoid sun exposure until your new skin has time to heal.

Deep peels may require bandages and soothing moisturizers, in addition to prescription antiviral medication. Make sure to follow any post-treatment instructions you receive.
