How to Choose & Apply Sunscreen
1. Choose a sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays
Over 90% of ultraviolet radiation is UVA, which is strongest in the early morning and afternoon. UVA rays can pass through window glass, causing tanning and wrinkles. UVB rays do not penetrate window glass but they can cause sunburn. Both UVA and UVB rays can cause suppression of the immune system. Using sunscreen with broad spectrum protection is very important.
2. Remember to reapply sunscreen
Apply sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB to all exposed skin, including lips, ears, back of hands and neck. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and apply it 30 minutes before going in the sun. While in the sun, reapply sunscreen every two hours and each time after swimming, exercising or sweating.
3. Out with the old: Throw away your old sunscreen
Replace last year's unused sunscreen for a new bottle because sunscreen isn’t meant to last forever. Seeing as how most people don't use as much as they should, chances are you have a bottle or two stored away. Be safe and choose a new sunscreen.
Don't forget the most important sunscreen advice: if you are using it, use it properly. Using popular brands like Coppertone, sold in drugstores, you should be using a shot-glassful on your body, with a full teaspoon just on your face. Remember to reapply every two hours while you are in the sun to ensure a summer full of safe, sun-filled fun.
4. Examine your skin once every month
Get to know your moles and birthmarks. During your examination, look for any abnormal skin growth in addition to the change in the color, shape, size or appearance of a current skin growth. Check for any area of skin (lesion) that does not heal after an injury. If you have any concerns, see a dermatologist immediately!
5. Protect your kids from the sun
Eighty-percent of lifetime sun damage to the skin is done by the time you are 18 years old. Your child should use at minimum a 30 SPF, broad spectrum sunscreen at all times. Please remember to reapply every two hours! Don't forget those little lips - a lip balm with SPF should be utilized as well.
