5 Secrets to Younger Looking Skin
While wrinkles and fine lines such as crow’s feet occur naturally as we age, there are ways to stop aiding their creation. The number one thing you can do to stop creating more fine lines and wrinkles around your eye and forehead area is wear shades!
When we’re out in the bright sun without sunglasses, we tend to squint. Think about folding the same piece of paper over and over again in the same spot. When we squint, we’re essentially doing the same thing to our skin - creasing it over and over again - and then it becomes a wrinkle that won’t go away.
So instead of trying to get rid of those wrinkles, why not just prevent them? Wearing sunglasses now will make you thankful in your older years. As an added bonus, you’ll also be protecting your eyesight as well as your skin!
Shield Your Skin
Sun damage is the biggest culprit for making skin appear older. Too much sun over the years will leave your skin looking tired and leathery, so start protecting it now.
Many people believe that skin damage only comes from baking in the sun for hours on end and repeatedly getting sun burnt, but the reality is that the sun is always there even when we can’t see it. If you expect to be outside for a good amount of time, wear sunscreen even if it’s cloudy. This will not only keep your skin looking great, but it will also ward off and protect you from skin cancer.
Be sure to pick a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, as there are many that only protect against UVB rays. While UVB rays only burn the top few layers of the skin, UVA rays run deep into the dermis and are responsible for causing wrinkling and aging of the skin.
A common myth says that the higher SPF, the higher the protection. Check out our blog post where we bust this myth along with several other common skincare myths. At Joie de Vivre we offer our own sunscreen product called “Shade”, an SPF35 sunscreen that is gentle enough for sensitive skin and light enough for everyday use. Eat Your Way to a Youthful Glow
Diet is just as important to your appearance as it is to your health. We’ve already discussed the importance of water in relation to your skin in another post, but there is a whole list of foods you can eat for more luminous, refreshed looking skin. Here are just a few of the foods known for giving your skin a boost:
Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish are great for healthy looking skin. Not only do they help reduce inflammation, but they also support your skin cells and keep them hydrated. This is especially true of salmon and tuna.
Antioxidant-rich food and drinks like pomegranates and green tea are great for reducing inflammation in the skin such as puffy eyes or acne, but they also fight against free radicals that damage your skin.
Aside from these particular foods, eating a healthy and balanced diet in general will help your overall look and feel. As an added bonus, we offer our very own product at Joie de Vivre called “Bloom” that is packed full of antioxidants to decrease puffiness around the eyes. Check it out now!
Revitalize With Retinoids
If you’re not doing so already, moisturizing your skin every morning and evening helps prevent new wrinkles from forming. But there are other types of over the counter and prescription topical remedies you can introduce into your daily routine to reduce and prevent wrinkles and fine lines, and Retinoids are gaining popularity for their effectiveness.
Retinoids are high in vitamin A and help regulate epithelial cell growth. While retinoids have been used for other purposes in the past such as acne prevention, they are more popular than ever for anti aging - reducing wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots.
Retinoids typically take anywhere from 2 to 6 months to start showing noticeable results. Plus, dermatologists typically recommend taking it slow and using retinoids only a couple times a week as they are known to irritate the skin at the beginning. But if you can power through the irritation and allow your skin to adjust, the results will all be worth it.

Prime Your Skin
We all know from experience that primer makes painting a whole lot easier and yields nearly perfect results. The same is true for applying makeup. Using a high quality face primer before applying your makeup can help hide many of your skin’s imperfections such as laugh lines, dry or thinning skin, forehead wrinkles, and more.
Primer creates a smooth and soft surface for applying the rest of your makeup, and many are super light and airy so it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing an extra layer on your face. Without primer, foundation tends to build up and crease in wrinkles or on dry skin and leaves your face looking old and weathered.
